Circello's ducal castle dates from the Norman era and was strengthened by the Aragonese, who withstood the Angevin siege of 1496 here.
On the highest point of Circello's rocky spur stands the ducal castle, built in the Norman period around the 11th century. In the 14th century it was completed with a sturdy square tower and later the Aragonese surrounded it with a four-sided fortified enclosure, making it one of the strongholds of the area.We are fascinated by the story of 1496, when Angevin troops attacked the fortress seven times without managing to take it: during one of the assaults the condottiero Camillo Vitelli was killed. Over the centuries the fief passed between various families, from the Carafa to the di Somma, who held it until the abolition of feudalism. We recommend admiring it at leisure from the village around it.
