The small village squeezed between rocks at the mouth of the Dragone, Amalfi's twin town in the days of the Maritime Republic.

The historic centre of Atrani occupies the lower part of the valley of the Dragone stream, between Amalfi, Pontone and Ravello. According to an old Salerno chronicle, the name comes from a Latin word meaning dark, because of the shape of the valley, like a cave enclosed by rock walls dropping sheer into the sea.Atrani's history runs alongside that of Amalfi: the two towns are said to have been founded around the 5th century and in the early Middle Ages were the only true urban centres on the coast. Atrani was almost a twin town of the capital and its inhabitants took part in electing the first leaders of the Maritime Republic. We recommend climbing its stairways: it is one of the most intimate villages on the Coast.
