Historic Centre of Atrani
Il piccolo borgo stretto tra le rocce alla foce del Dragone, città gemella di Amalfi ai tempi della Repubblica marinara.
Church · Atrani (SA)

An 11th-12th-century church set into the rock of Monte Civita, outside the old walls, used as Atrani's cemetery until 1927.
The church of San Michele is called fuori le Mura (outside the walls) because it stands beyond Atrani's old circuit, near the North Gate towards Ravello. Built between the 11th and 12th centuries, it uses a hollow in Monte Civita: its trapezoidal shape follows the line of the rock. You reach it by ramps and steps, up to a bell gable with side volutes and a single bell. The oldest room, barrel-vaulted, lets the bare rock show through. Until 1927 the church served as the village cemetery and the walls are still lined with tombs: hence its nickname of Camposantino. On the altar is a 20th-century painting of Saint Michael. Today it is only partly accessible, but we recommend the climb for the intimate atmosphere of the place.
