An old ossuary in the quarries of the Sanità district holding thousands of epidemic victims' remains, linked to the folk cult of the anime pezzentelle.

The name recalls the springs of water that once flowed in this part of the Sanità district. In the cemetery's large caves lie the remains of about forty thousand people, mostly victims of the plague of 1656 and the cholera of 1836. Over time the bones from the old underground burial places of the churches, emptied during the French period, were also brought here. When a sudden flood swept the remains out into the streets, the bones were rearranged in the caves, protected by a wall and accompanied by an altar: since then the place has been the city's ossuary. Here the ritual of the anime pezzentelle spread, in which Neapolitans adopted a skull, the capuzzella, asking the forgotten soul for protection. We recommend a slow and respectful visit.
