A Carmelite complex founded in 1577 in the Sanità district, later turned into a porcelain factory after the suppression of religious orders.

In the heart of the Sanità district, the complex of Santa Maria della Vita was founded in 1577 by the Carmelite fathers, who were given a chapel dedicated to Saint Vitus; the building of the church followed that of the convent. 17th-century views show the large convent building, the church, the cloister with an entrance turret and the bell tower. After the suppression of religious orders, the convent changed character: it became the home of a porcelain factory, with the church used as a warehouse, and later passed to the administration of the Real Albergo dei Poveri. We like discovering these transformations while strolling through the Sanità, and we recommend looking at the two-level cloister.
