Sixteenth-century church just beyond Porta San Gennaro, intended by Queen Joanna as an Aragonese pantheon and decorated in the Baroque era.

Just beyond Porta San Gennaro, near piazza Cavour, we find the Gesù delle Monache, also called San Giovanni Evangelista. Queen Joanna, widow of Ferdinand I, wanted it at the beginning of the 16th century as a pantheon for the Aragonese dynasty. The dream was never realised and the church was only completed in 1582. In the 17th and 18th centuries the interior was clothed in Baroque by artists such as Lorenzo Vaccaro and Arcangelo Guglielmelli. Flanked by a convent, it is still a parish church today.
