A church founded in 1054 for the merchants of Scala, on the Amalfi Coast; rebuilt in the 18th century with Baroque decoration.

On the little square of the same name, in the Pendino district, Santa Maria la Scala tells of the links between Naples and the Amalfi Coast. In 1054 the people of Scala, who traded with Naples, obtained land outside the walls on which to build a small quarter around the church. When the trade ended, the church was abandoned by the people of Scala, then rebuilt in the 16th century and decorated in Baroque style in the 18th; in the mid-19th century it was restored by the architect Pasquale Francesconi.
