A very old church on Piazza Portanova, one of the city's seven diaconiae, documented as early as the 9th century.

On Piazza Portanova, near Corso Umberto I, stands one of the oldest churches in Naples. Legend has it that it was founded by Constantine; it was certainly one of the city's seven diaconiae, charitable institutions where the ancient Greek rite was celebrated. In the 9th century it is documented under the name Santa Maria in Cosmedin, like the church of the same name in Rome, and the remains of Bishop Eustasius were moved here.
