The sailors' church at the start of Via Marina, founded in 1554 by a sailor who survived a shipwreck.

At the start of Via Marina, in the port area, stands Santa Maria di Portosalvo. Its story begins around 1554, when a sailor, Bernardino Belladonna, having survived a shipwreck, wanted to thank the Madonna by founding a confraternity with a chapel together with other sailors and shipowners. The church was built up to 1564 on a strip of land that was then washed by the sea on three sides, outside the city walls. It is still a symbol of the bond between Naples and its seafaring people.
