Sanctuary on the highest hill of Rofrano, built on an old Basilian monastery linked to the abbey of Grottaferrata.

On the highest knoll of Rofrano stands the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Grottaferrata, where around the year 1000 a Greek-rite Basilian monastery grew up. In 1131 King Roger II granted the church to the abbot of Grottaferrata, the famous monastery founded by St Nilus near Rome, from which it takes its name.A legend tells of a small statue of the Madonna found by peasants and of a miraculous snowfall on 15 August, only on the spot where the sanctuary stands today. We like coming up here for the feast of 8 September, also deeply felt by emigrant communities. We suggest enjoying the panorama over the woods of inland Cilento.
