A Carmelite church and convent founded in 1577 in the Sanità district, with a fine 17th-century cloister and clock tower; currently closed.

In 1577 a plot of land with a shrine dedicated to Saint Vitus was donated to a Carmelite friar so that he could build a church and convent there. Dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Vitus, the church later took the simpler name of Santa Maria della Vita. Sources also mention a catacomb beneath it, never found. The convent, the fine cloister and the clock tower date from the 17th century. After the friars were expelled in 1806 the complex had an eventful history: the church became a candle factory and the convent housed a famous porcelain manufactory, then a hospital and a school for girls. The church is now closed: we recommend looking at its exterior as you walk towards the Fontanelle.
