Santa Maria della Petrara is the parish of Castelnuovo di Conza, a village of the upper Sele valley marked by the 1980 earthquake.
In Castelnuovo di Conza the community gathers around Santa Maria della Petrara, the village's only parish, which belongs to the archdiocese of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno. Its Marian title has accompanied the religious life of this small hill village on the border with Irpinia for centuries.The church's history is deeply bound up with the earthquake of 23 November 1980, which brought down the old building completely along with much of the village. We suggest visiting with this memory in mind, perhaps also stopping at the monument in the village that remembers the victims of the quake: it seems to us the most respectful way to understand how much the community has managed to rebuild.
