The "church of the Penitents" in the Quartieri Spagnoli, founded in 1647 for women who chose to change their lives after the 1631 eruption.

On via Pasquale Scura, in the Quartieri Spagnoli, the church of Santa Maria del Presidio is remembered as the church of the Pentite (Penitents). It was founded in 1647 by the priest Antonio Pironti, who turned a palazzo into a conservatory for some forty women who, having survived the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631, had decided to change their lives.Rebuilt in 1661 thanks to the Pironti brothers, who were buried there in marble tombs, it was badly damaged in the Second World War.
