Nineteenth-century church on piazza del Plebiscito, heir to the convent where Queen Sancia, wife of Robert of Anjou, was buried.

On piazza del Plebiscito, in the San Ferdinando district, the church of Santa Croce di Palazzo dates from the 19th century, but inherits a much older history. In the Angevin era a church dedicated to Santa Maria della Croce stood here.Queen Sancia, wife of Robert of Anjou, founded a convent here, retired to it as Sister Clare of the Holy Cross and was buried here in 1345. The old complex was later abandoned and finally demolished in 1778; the present church keeps its name.
