The first Angevin church in Naples, founded in 1270 near piazza Mercato with a hospital for foreigners; arch with a clock.

Near piazza Mercato, in the Pendino district, Sant'Eligio Maggiore is among the first churches built by the Angevins in Naples. In 1270 Charles I of Anjou gave land to three French merchants to build a church with a hospital. It was meant to provide care and burial for foreigners, mostly French and Provençal, who had come as merchants or soldiers. This was the area where Conradin of Swabia had been executed in 1268. Beside the church we recognise the famous arch with its clock.
