Church of Sant'Angelo a Nilo

  • Visit: about 20 min

Church founded by Cardinal Rinaldo Brancaccio, with his Renaissance tomb carved by Donatello and Michelozzo.

In the heart of the historic centre we find Sant'Angelo a Nilo, the church founded by Cardinal Rinaldo Brancaccio. His tomb, in the presbytery, is a Renaissance masterpiece: it was made by Donatello and Michelozzo in 1427–28 in Pisa, and shipped from there by sea to Naples. We recommend looking for the relief of the Assumption of the Virgin, attributed to Donatello's own hand, and Marco Pino's painting of Saint Michael the Archangel on the high altar. The stucco covering the church inside and out is 18th-century, to a design by Arcangelo Guglielmelli.
