Church of Sant'Agnello Maggiore

  • Visit: about 20 min

Deconsecrated church at Caponapoli, on the highest point of the ancient acropolis, linked to Saint Agnellus, co-patron of the city.

Let's climb to Caponapoli, the highest point of ancient Neapolis: here stands Sant'Agnello Maggiore, also called Sant'Aniello. Tradition says that Saint Agnellus's parents came from Syracuse to pray before an image of the Madonna for a son, and that a church later rose here. The first reliable record dates from 1058; from 1517 the church was enlarged, incorporating the ancient structure. Today it is deconsecrated, but it remains a fascinating place in which to read the many layers of the city's history.
