Ancient church on vico Limoncello, founded in the 8th century and later rebuilt in Baroque style; no longer open for worship.

On vico Limoncello lies hidden one of the most curiously named churches in Naples: San Gennaro Spogliamorti, or San Gennariello. It was founded in the 8th century at the behest of Duke Sergius I and in the Middle Ages lay within the Giudecca, the city's Jewish quarter. The name ("stripper of the dead") recalls the building's use as a repository for the dead, who were stripped of their belongings here. Rebuilt in Baroque style after 1607 by a congregation, it was abandoned in the 19th century and is no longer a place of worship: we can admire its exterior while strolling through the historic centre.
