Barnabite church in Chiaia begun in 1616, one of the landmarks of Neapolitan Baroque.

The name, according to an old explanation, comes from the myrtles, "mortelle", that grew here; more probably it comes from a Spanish family that owned the land. We are in Chiaia, in front of one of the landmark churches of Neapolitan Baroque. The first stone was laid in 1616 for the Barnabite fathers, to a design inspired by their Milanese churches; the work then passed to Giovanni Cola di Franco and Bartolomeo Picchiatti and lasted decades. Next door stands the old college, completed in 1650.
