The early Christian underground cemeteries of Naples, the third most important in Italy after those of Rome and Syracuse.

Beneath Naples lies a city of the dead: the catacombs dug into the tuff by the Christian community in ancient times. For archaeological and artistic importance they rank third in Italy, after those of Rome and Syracuse. The most famous are the Catacombs of San Gennaro and of San Gaudioso, in the Sanità district, with early Christian frescoes and mosaics. Visiting them with the neighbourhood's guides is one of the most moving ways to discover the city's roots.
