A 20th-century building on Piazza Matteotti with tall lava-stone piers, a monumental staircase and doorposts carved in relief.

Overlooking Piazza Matteotti, the Casa del Mutilato is one of the most recognisable 20th-century buildings in Naples. Its tall portal on Via Diaz, with the imposing staircase topped by a statue of Victory, is offset from the main body of the building but perfectly aligned with the square. We are always struck by its theatrical power. The façades are punctuated by pairs of lava-stone piers eighteen metres high, set on a base of the same material. On either side of the portal two monolithic doorposts in Vesuvian stone are carved with reliefs by Vico Consorti and Giuseppe Pellegrini telling of the wars and history of the early 20th century. We recommend looking at them up close.
