Sanctuary on piazza del Carmine with the Madonna Bruna and the tallest bell tower in Naples; linked to Masaniello and Conradin of Swabia.

On piazza del Carmine, next to piazza Mercato, stands one of the best-loved sanctuaries in Naples. Tradition tells that the Carmelites, fleeing Palestine, brought here the image of the Madonna Bruna, venerated on Mount Carmel; the first reliable record of their presence dates from 1268.The square witnessed the beheading of Conradin of Swabia and Masaniello's revolt. The bell tower is the tallest in the city and on 16 July, the Madonna's feast day, it takes centre stage in the spectacular "burning" with fireworks.
