Sanctuary from 1601 known as "la Cesarea", with a coffered ceiling and a large Massacre of the Innocents; Padre Pio prayed here in 1917.

In piazza Cesarea, in the Avvocata district, the sanctuary of Santa Maria della Pazienza is also known as la Cesarea after its founder, Annibale Cesareo, who built it in 1601 together with a hospital. On entering, we are struck by the coffered ceiling with the Rest on the Flight into Egypt and, on the inner façade, Oronzo Malinconico's huge Massacre of the Innocents. A curiosity: in 1917 Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, then a soldier at the nearby barracks, attended this church and celebrated Mass here.
