Basilica sanctuary in the Santa Lucia quarter, once right on the beach; rebuilt in the 19th century and after the war, and dear to Neapolitans.

In the Santa Lucia quarter, a few steps from the seafront, stands the basilica of Santa Lucia a Mare. The name recalls that it once looked straight onto the beach; tradition says it was founded by a niece of Constantine, but the first reliable records date from the 9th century. The 16th-century church was buried in 1845 when the Chiatamone road was raised, and the present church was built above it, then rebuilt after the bombing of 1943. It is a diocesan sanctuary and minor basilica, much loved by the neighbourhood for its devotion to Saint Lucy.
