Theatine basilica on piazza San Gaetano, built on the Temple of the Dioscuri, two Corinthian columns of which survive on the façade.

On piazza San Gaetano, along via Tribunali, the basilica of San Paolo Maggiore stands on the site of the 1st-century Temple of the Dioscuri: two Corinthian columns with their architrave are still there, on the façade. The temple front remained standing until the earthquake of 1688.The first church was built between the 8th and 9th centuries to celebrate a victory over the Saracens. In 1538 it was entrusted to Saint Cajetan (Gaetano Thiene) and the Theatines, who rebuilt it at the end of the 16th century. Let's climb the steps: the Baroque interior is magnificent.
