One of the oldest basilicas in Naples, of Constantinian origin and rebuilt in the 6th century; reopened in 2012 after lengthy restoration.

In the Porto district, in the historic centre, the basilica of San Giovanni Maggiore spans almost seventeen centuries of history. Tradition links it to Constantine and dates it to around 324, on top of a pagan temple; it was certainly rebuilt in the 6th century by Bishop Vincent and became one of the city's four major churches.Closed for decades for restoration and archaeological excavations, it reopened permanently in 2012. On a visit we can read every era of Naples on its walls, from early Christian traces to the Baroque.
