1540 basilica commissioned by the viceroy Pedro de Toledo, incorporated into Palazzo San Giacomo on piazza Municipio; Spain's national church.

Inside Palazzo San Giacomo, the City Hall on piazza Municipio, opens the basilica of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli. It was commissioned in 1540 by the viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo together with a hospital for the poor; the design was by Ferdinando Manlio. In the 18th century the hospital was demolished to build the palace of the Bourbon Ministries, today's City Hall. It is among the most important buildings of the viceregal period and is still Spain's national church today; in 1911 it became a minor basilica.
