The 8 December long weekend officially opens the Christmas season, and in Campania it is one of the best times to travel: the cities light up, the nativity-scene workshops are in full swing and the villages begin their winter festivities. Here are a few ideas for planning your weekend.
Naples and its nativity scenes
In Naples this weekend belongs to San Gregorio Armeno, the street of nativity scenes, where the workshops display shepherds, scenes and figures of every kind. It is worth combining the stroll with a visit to one of the city's historic nativity scenes and a walk around the old centre, along Spaccanapoli and the decumani.
Salerno and its light displays
For several years now Salerno has lit up for the Christmas season with light installations that draw visitors from all over Italy. The old town and the seafront become a walking route of lights and Christmas markets: it is best to arrive by train or leave your car in the park-and-ride car parks, as it gets very crowded at weekends.
Villages and living nativity scenes
During December many villages in Campania put on living nativity scenes, Christmas markets and street festivities, from Irpinia to the Cilento, from the Sannio to the upper Caserta area. Our events calendar collects the dates as they are announced.
Hot springs and relaxation
If you are looking for a quieter long weekend, choose the hot springs: on Ischia, in the Campi Flegrei or at Contursi, outdoor thermal pools are a pleasure even, and especially, in winter.
Practical tips
The Immaculate Conception weekend is in high demand: book accommodation and transport early, especially in Naples, on the Amalfi Coast and in the cities with light displays, and always check event times and dates before you set off.
What to eat
December is the month of traditional sweets: struffoli, roccocò, mostaccioli, susamielli and paste reali appear in pastry shops from the Immaculate Conception onwards. In the inland villages it is also the season of fried zeppole, chestnuts and new wines, often the stars of the festivals and markets over the long weekend.
