Mighty walls of Greek origin, reworked by Romans, Byzantines, Normans and Angevins, enclosing the historic centre of Policastro.

The walls of Policastro still enclose much of the historic centre of this hamlet of Santa Marina and are among the best-preserved medieval circuits. Their history begins in the Greek period, in 471 BC, continues with Roman adaptations in 194 BC and reaches the Norman rebuilding between 1085 and 1111.Walking along the circuit, we recommend looking for the blocks in polygonal masonry, evidence of the oldest phase onto which later fortifications were grafted. Damaged several times in the Middle Ages, the walls were rebuilt by the Byzantines, Normans, Angevins and finally by the Sanseverino counts: we like reading them as a layered book of stone.
