An 11th-century Romanesque cathedral commissioned by Robert Guiscard, with an early medieval crypt, a rose window and a 12th-century bell tower.

In Policastro, a hamlet of Santa Marina, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta holds centuries of history. The oldest core is the 6th-century crypt, built on Roman remains; the church itself was commissioned in the 11th century by the Norman Robert Guiscard and consecrated in 1079 by Alfanus I, bishop of Salerno. In the early 18th century the interior was renovated in Baroque style. On the gabled façade we recommend looking at the Romanesque rose window, the Renaissance portal with the bishop's date and coat of arms, the marble shrine with the enthroned Virgin and the two stone lions. Beside it rises the three-tier bell tower: the lower tier is from the 12th century and holds two Roman inscriptions, the other two are from the 15th century.
