Sanctuary of Maria Santissima del Monte Sacro

The sanctuary on Monte Gelbison has very ancient origins: as early as 1131 a document mentions a rock of Santa Maria on the Rofrano side. It belonged to the bishop of Capaccio until 1323, when it was bought by Riccardo di Marzano, baron of Novi, who entrusted it to the Celestine fathers. In the 19th century it returned to the bishop, and the pilgrims' house and new access routes were built.In recent decades the site has been thoroughly renewed: the church modernised, the bell tower and church of San Bartolomeo rebuilt, an illuminated metal cross and an underground gallery linking the two churches and holding works of art and traces of ancient history. We recommend climbing to the highest point, passing through the Madonna's garden and tasting the cool water of the Madonna.
