A castle of Norman origin on the slopes of Monte Partenio, the historic heart of San Martino Valle Caudina and home of the Dukes della Leonessa.

On the slopes of Monte Partenio, at about 372 metres, the Pignatelli della Leonessa Castle is the fortified core around which San Martino Valle Caudina grew. It was built in the Norman period, perhaps over an earlier Lombard fortification. From 1343 the fief belonged to the Lagonessa, and in 1627 the della Leonessa family obtained the ducal title, which it kept until the abolition of feudalism in 1806.The complex consists of a ring of walls with four towers, a chapel consecrated in 1706 and a residential palace around the courtyard. The state hall preserves medieval vaults and 17th–18th-century frescoes with episodes from the family's history. Restored after the war, it is still the private home of the dukes: we suggest admiring its bulk as you stroll through the village.
