A yellow tuff castle with six towers, founded in 1227 as Frederick II's hunting residence on a hill overlooking the Campi Flegrei.

On a hill looking out over the Campi Flegrei stands Monteleone Castle, a quadrangular building in blocks of yellow tuff, with six towers: four at the corners and two on the long sides. You enter the central courtyard through an arched gateway. Today it is not open to visitors, but we like admiring it from outside. It was founded in 1227 as a hunting residence of Frederick II; destroyed, it was rebuilt at the end of the 13th century under Charles of Anjou. In the 16th century it was given to Cardinal Georges d'Amboise and later passed to the Pignatelli of Monteleone, from whom it takes its name. We recommend viewing its massive bulk from the road.
