Ruins of the castle that gave Monteforte Irpino its name, set in a pine wood on the San Martino hill.

The castle lies at the very origin of Monteforte's name. It stands in a strategic position on the San Martino hill, where there was most likely already a Roman-era outpost; the Lombards built a fortress here, later enlarged by the Angevins and Aragonese. Guy de Montfort lived here, and later the fief passed to the Orsini, who lost it after rebelling against Charles V.Today evocative ruins remain: stretches of the stone walls, a round tower and a fine fireplace. We like climbing up here because the remains lie in a fenced and equipped pine wood, ideal for a walk. We suggest combining the visit with the nearby church of San Martino: together they form the oldest and most significant core of the town.
