A large Pompeian domus of almost 1,800 square metres, excavated between 1926 and 1932, named after a portrait of the poet Menander.

The House of the Menander is one of the great town residences of ancient Pompeii: it covers almost 1,800 square metres and is an excellent example of how a wealthy family of the city lived. We like walking through it slowly, room after room, to grasp the size and layout of a true domus. It was brought to light during excavations carried out between 1926 and 1932. The name does not refer to the owner, but to the image of the Greek poet Menander found inside the house. We recommend including it in your itinerary among the domus of Pompeii: it is a stop that helps you imagine daily life before the eruption.
