Medieval village in the Lattari Mountains at over 360 metres, made of hamlets scattered on the slope overlooking Amalfi, Atrani and Ravello.

According to local historians, Scala was founded in the 4th century by shipwrecked travellers bound for Constantinople, although the settlements visible today are medieval. The village spreads across a plateau of the Lattari Mountains, more than 360 metres above sea level, and looks down on Amalfi, Atrani and Ravello. Tradition has it that its oldest name was Cama, meaning enclosed among the mountains. We like its layout of scattered hamlets on the hillside, linked by irregular paths with no rigid geometry. It was once protected by walls and towers where the rock was not enough, and by two castles, including the one guarding Pontone. We recommend exploring it on foot, moving from one hamlet to the next.
