The old mother church of Contursi, dating from before 840, enlarged several times into its present three-nave Baroque form.

The origins of this church are uncertain, but we know it already existed before 840. Over time it changed name several times, from Santa Maria to Santa Maria Maggiore and finally to its present dedication to the Angels, becoming the town's main religious landmark. We like reading in its history that of the whole community.Originally it had a single nave with an entrance to the north; it was enlarged in 1522 and again in the 18th century, until it had three naves with niches, a votive chapel, a baptistery and a bell tower. The style is a classicising Baroque. In 1965 the entrance was opened to the south and the orientation reversed: we recommend noticing this curious detail.
