Historic Centre of Cetara

The heart of Cetara climbs the slopes of the steep little valley of the Cetus stream, which flows into a small cove at the foot of Monte Falerzio, among citrus groves and rocky stretches. The town has always been tied to fishing: the name may come from a tuna fishery or from the sellers of large fish such as tuna.The town follows an axis of medieval origin linking the sea to the mountain. In the 9th century it was a Saracen stronghold and from 1030 its fortunes were bound to the bishop of Amalfi, who was entitled to a tithe on the catch. We recommend climbing through the alleys to the church of San Pietro, around which the village grew.
