Tools, barrels, presses and photographs tell the story of rural life on Ischia and its shift to a tourism economy.

Forio's Museo del Contadino tells the rural soul of the island of Ischia, a farming tradition dating back as far as the Greek colonists in the 7th century BC. Here old work tools, the typical wooden barrels and two-century-old presses are gathered. We like finding in these objects the toil and ingenuity of generations.Period photographs and maps with aerial surveys from the 1950s and 1960s show how quickly the island changed, moving from a farming economy to one based on spa tourism. We recommend this museum to truly understand the history of Ischia beyond its beaches.
