Medieval alleys that grew up around the church of San Vito, defended from the sea by the Torrione and extending to the Soccorso headland.
The heart of Forio grew up around the year 1000 around the church of San Vito: the streets of that time can still be recognised and ran down to the small fishermen's quarter near the pier. In the 14th century a chapel, which later became the church of Santa Maria di Loreto, encouraged the town to grow. We like getting lost along these routes. The maze of alleys around the Torrione served as a barrier against pirates. Between the 16th and 17th centuries the convents of the Franciscans and Augustinians rose on the Soccorso headland, later linked to the centre by today's Corso Umberto I, while towards Monterone the church of San Michele and the Piazza del Cerriglio were built. We recommend discovering them on foot.
