Church of San Nicola di Bari in Castello di Cisterna

  • Visit: about 20 min

18th-century abbey church of Castello di Cisterna, a Greek cross with a tall dome, built over an old stone quarry.

The Church of San Nicola di Bari was built in the second half of the 18th century along the main street, over an old stone quarry known as "la molarella", because the old parish church was no longer big enough. It is reached by a double flight of steps in lava stone. We like its Greek-cross plan with a tall, slender stucco-decorated dome. Beneath the street there are two rooms once used as a cemetery and a wartime shelter.
