Church of Maria Santissima dei Martiri in Tortorella
- Visit: about 20 min

Rural chapel that began as a church and hospice for travellers in the era of Greek monasticism, with remains of paintings and the Virgin of the Pomegranate.
The story of this chapel takes us back to the 10th century, when Greek monasticism shaped life in Tortorella. Just outside the walls stood a complex of church and hospice dedicated to Santa Maria dei Martiri, which welcomed and cared for travellers weary from the road. It had small rooms, a water mill and the Ventreglia spring.Today the chapel, recently restored, blends harmoniously into the surrounding countryside. We recommend looking at the remains of paintings on the walls that were not redone and, in the centre, the statue of the Virgin of the Pomegranate seated on a throne, the heart of devotion in this place.
