For 47 editions the Chestnut Festival has livened up the old town of San Cipriano Picentino, a hill village at the gateway to the Picentini mountains, half an hour from Salerno. Four days of festivities, with stalls opening in the afternoon.

Picentini chestnuts appear in many sweet and savoury recipes, from chestnut-flour pasta to rustic soups and artisan liqueurs. There are also craft stalls, music and corners devoted to local products such as honey and hill wines. Entry is free.

Our tip: pair the festival with a walk in the woods of the Monti Picentini Regional Park, which turn red and gold at this time of year.
