Remains of a 1st-century BC Roman villa, the only evidence of ancient Eburum, a municipium that controlled the Sele plain.

At Paterno lie the remains of a Roman villa built in the 1st century BC. In the 2nd century AD it was extensively transformed, dividing the spaces into many smaller rooms, which remained in use until the age of Constantine, as a bronze coin found during excavations shows. We like reading these transformations in the masonry. The site is precious because it is the only evidence of the settlement of Eburum, an ancient Lucanian centre that became a municipium in Roman times. From here economic and strategic control was exercised over the peoples of the Sele plain. We recommend booking your visit and having the story of Eboli's origins told to you.
