"Michele Aufiero" School Building

An elegant school building opened in 1937 in Sturno, the gift of an emigrant who returned from the United States.

This building tells a fine story of emigration and generosity: it bears the name of Michele Aufiero, known as John, a native of Sturno who made his fortune in the United States and invested heavily in his home village. The design was entrusted to a highly skilled architect and, according to local tradition, it echoes the town hall of Durrës, in Albania. The building was opened in 1937 in the presence of the then prefect and still houses the village's primary school today. We suggest taking a good look at it as you stroll through Sturno: it is a concrete testament to the bond between Irpinia and the communities that left for overseas. As it is a working school, we like to admire it from outside, respecting the daily life of the young pupils.
