Church of Santa Maria del Plesco in Casamarciano

  • Visit: about 20 min

A church attached to a monastery from around the year 1000, rebuilt in the 16th century to a design by Domenico Fontana, with a fine 18th-century choir.

In Casamarciano the church of Santa Maria del Plesco is linked to a monastery founded around the year 1000. In the 16th century it was rebuilt to a design by Domenico Fontana, one of the great architects of the time, and in the 18th century it was restored. We enjoy discovering how a small town preserves the signature of such an important master. The interior was once very rich in marble, stucco and paintings: some of these works are now in the Capodimonte Museum in Naples. The church still has a precious 18th-century wooden choir, which we recommend looking at closely. It is an interesting stop for anyone exploring the heritage of the Nola area.
