Pietraroja's parish church with an 11th-century Romanesque portal supported by a lioness and a she-bear suckling two children.

In the upper part of Pietraroja, in Piazza San Nicola, stands the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the village's parish church. It was built reusing elements from the older Church of San Paolo, destroyed by the 1688 earthquake: a concrete example of how the communities of the Matese managed to rebuild while preserving memory. The piece that fascinates us most is the 11th-century Romanesque portal, supported at the sides by two carved figures: a lioness and a she-bear suckling two children. We also recommend looking closely at the high reliefs that accompany it, and combining the visit with a stroll through the village, also known for its extraordinary palaeontological heritage.
