Church · Sacco (SA)

A very old proto-Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra, with a bell gable and small apse, the village's first parish.
In the core of Sacco Vecchio stands one of the oldest churches in Italy: tradition dates its construction to around AD 600, even before the Early Christian basilica of the Annunziata in Paestum. Dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra, it was the seat of the village's first parish. We are moved to think how many centuries of prayer have passed through these simple walls. The style is proto-Romanesque: the rectangular plan recalls a ship, symbol of the Church guided through the waves. The masonry is plain and solid, the bell gable dominates the façade and a small apse closes the rear, the only reference to the first Christian churches. We recommend noticing the three slanting windows on the south-east wall.
