Church of San Fantino in Torraca

  • Visit: about 20 min

Remains of Torraca's oldest church, linked to the Italo-Greek monk St Fantinus, a few minutes' walk from the village.

About ten minutes' walk from Torraca lie the remains of the church of San Fantino, considered the oldest in the village. It is dedicated to the Italo-Greek monk Fantinus, teacher of St Nilus, who according to tradition took refuge here around 951, fleeing Saracen raids in Calabria, and died here in 965.The visible structures date from the 16th century, when the church depended on the abbey of San Giovanni a Piro. A later restoration erased its Greek-derived style and then the building was abandoned. Today the apse and the outer walls remain: we recommend this walk for the charm of the ruins set in the countryside.
