Baronial Castle of Casalbuono

  • Visit: about 1 h 15 min

The 15th-century castle known as the Baron's Palace, at the western end of the village, with a round tower and an arched loggia.

At the western end of Casalbuono's historic centre stands the baronial castle, which everyone in town calls the Palazzo del Barone (Baron's Palace). It probably dates from the 15th century and was the fief of several noble families, including the Sanseverino and the Cardone. On the arched loggia the stone coat of arms of the Papis family can still be seen. The plan is quadrangular, with a battered round tower on the south-east side and a polygonal block to the west; the entrance faces east. Of the original layout mainly the central block and the tower remain, because a heavy restoration added a floor and balconies. We recommend observing its different phases as you walk around the walls.
